RIP “Vampira” – Maila Nurmi
Oh man! How did I miss this news?
Do you remember Vampira? Maybe most of us punks are too young to remember her, but you may know Elvira. Basically Elvira was a rip off of Vampira.
Vampira’s real name was Maila Nurmi, a Finnish-American who played a sexy vampire woman and announced scary horror shows on television in the 1950’s. She passed away in Los Angeles on January 10th, 2008.
I have the DVD “Plan 9 From outer Space” and Maila is in it dressed as her Vampira personality. The movie is so cheesy it’s good. you can see references to it in the movie “Ed Wood” starring Johnny Depp who plays the eccentric Edward Wood a real life director and creator of many campy films.
