Oh crap. I admit it, I picked the loosing team. Crap. You may have read in my article here that I purchased a HD-DVD player not long ago. I'm sure you all heard as I did that Warner Brothers has gone Blu-Ray and a bunch of other studios seem to be ready to follow. This will make Blu-Ray the most supported next generation DVD system as far as movie studios go.

Confirmation for me was to a local Target this weekend. It sure didn't take them long to flip-flop. What used to be a equal shelf space ratio HD-DVD to Blu-Ray has now greatly swayed in favor of Blu-Ray. I counted 5 columns of HD-DVDs to 11 columns of Blu-Ray DVDs.

I am bummed out about this.

Then I read this article on The Consumerist where they are saying that all the existing Blu-Ray players will not be able to play upcoming Blu-Ray DVD's because the new Blu-Ray disks themselves will have features that are not compatible. Most of this incompatibility seems to revolve around online features. It seems that the only Blu-Ray player system that will work is the Sony PlayStation 3 because it is upgradable.

I find this interesting because my seemingly outdated HD-DVD player can already support these online oriented features and is firmware upgradable. I know this because I have upgraded my firmware via the players built-in Ethernet port connected to my broadband connection.

So if I have to purchase a Blu-Ray player in the future I am happy that people who were early adopters of Blu-Ray will have to purchase new players also. Bastards.

We have all heard the arguments for Linux and comparisons to Microsoft's Operating Systems. We have also heard the merits of Apple's OS/X Operating System, and it has even started to look very interesting for businesses with last years release of OS/X Leopard.

What is not talked about is how in fact Linux is basically a Operating System that runs on Microsoft hardware.

If you have been in the business long enough you should know what I mean. The Intel x86 architecture has been tuned over the years to run Microsoft Windows. It's a total monopoly. Oh yeah, you could say it's an open architecture if you live with your head up your ass.

As a matter of fact even Apple has conceded their proprietary hardware in favor of Intel's Microsoft hardware. You can even find people who have Microsoft Windows running directly on this "new" Apple hardware.

Back to my main point: The biggest problem, maybe the only problem facing Linux is that all computer hardware is basically Microsoft hardware and Linux has to reverse engineer it to make Linux work on it. The Linux community has had the luck last year to get Dell to begin to sell computer with Ubuntu pre-loaded and this has been a good thing for Linux, however the hardware is just Microsoft hardware with Linux installed from the factory. Not a really risky commitment.

What the world needs is Linux hardware. This is hardware made specifically to run Linux. In my opinion this should not be Intel manufactured. Perhaps AMD should take the lead position in developing CPU chips that are tuned for Linux, or even better would be to get someone like SGI (previously known as Silicon Graphics) to turn their MIP presses again with tweaks for Linux.

Until we see specific Linux hardware on the market Linux will be forced to play on another teams home field.

Holy Shit! Gizmodo Wrote a Honest Article!

Gizmodo sucks. Did I say that out loud? Yeah, I did. Of course I also read Gizmodo , but they suck balls. Their articles are always tainted the opinions of what seems to be a pre-puberty kids opinion of what is cool. Their articles seldom have any real knowledgeable information or fair comparisons.

That's why I was surprised to read this . Hey Gizmodo leader dude, you better keep this guy on the payroll, if you have a payroll that is. Gizmodo gives the term will work for Wii a whole new meaning.

Anyway, the article goes on to tell us what we've all known all along, that CES is a big pile of scum sucking bastards selling lots of techno shit we don't need. Every once in a while one of the scum sucker companies hits the lotto and has a hit, but we never remember the thousands of other shitty products that were at the show.

So congratulations Gizmodo. Now go back to your room.

P.S. Dude: did Bette give you a blowjob?

You know what I would like to see go away in 2008? Web Zines that make you click “next” through five pages for an article that is maybe a half page long so they can up their banner impression count.

Recently I saw a Digg that linked to a Time article about the 25 best something or other for 2007. They had you click through ten pages to see their lousy blah blah. In the end you felt ripped off. I clicked through all these pages for this crap?

Probably most readers never heard of Time magazine. Well ok, the old folks do. It was a print magazine that is probably dying a miserable death. Who the heck reads that crappy propaganda nowadays? They must be suffering because it looks like their web site is somehow affiliated with CNN. Yeah even some young folks know who CNN is…not that most young people give a damn about CNN.

Oops I got off topic.

Another advertising strategy that sucks are those ads that you get full-page when you go to some homepages. you know the ones I mean, they usually have a link to skip and go straight to the good stuff. Which I suppose is what most people do.
Those ads suck. A lot of times I just hit my back button and forget about reading whatever it was that I was trying to get to because you suck for blocking my road to your good stuff. You are an asshole.
If you think that you are the only web site that has whatever article people are trying to read you are sadly mistaken. Folks in 10 minutes, or less, any exclusivity you may have had is over in Internet time. Whatever content you are blocking with your crappy advertising will be all over the place. Probably with better quality and more detail.

Its stupid decisions like these ad placements and forcing your readers to page through a dozen pages for your content that are causing you to die. You need to get an ad agency who gets it if you are unable to get it by yourself. Sell your stuff by making friends with your readers not by insulting them. Be a good host when guests come to visit. It will get you further.

I recently saw this article (direct link: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/31/business/31dvd.html?_r=3&pagewanted=1&ref=technology&oref=slogin) about the High Definition DVD war and I have to disagree. I purchased a HD-DVD recently and it is awesome. I also suspect that the HD-DVD format will win the war because Sony usually is unable to compromise and they are always more expensive for technology that usually has no real benefit over it's competitors.

The article also tries to say that Blu-Ray is shipped inside Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console, but this is no big deal because DVD playback capability was also included in the PlayStation 2 model console. Did you ever really watch DVD's from your PlayStation 2 game system? That sucks! The game controller may feel "right" playing video games, but controlling movies with a game controller is pure crap

BTW, Sony's PlayStation 3 console is selling about as well as Microsoft's latest operating system Vista…Poorly!

The only way Sony has a chance to make Blu-Ray a de-facto standard will be to get the Blu-Ray players under $200. While they are at it they also should get the PlayStation 3 console under $250 so it would also be cost competitive to the other game systems on the market.

We all know these price points will not happen and therefore HD-DVD will emerge the winner in the high definition DVD format wars.

Yeah, you read it right here on Male Muse.
